Mental health is an integral component of overall well-being, equally as vital as physical health. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that there is "no health without mental health" (WHO).
Despite this recognition, mental health services remain underprioritized globally. In many low- and middle-income countries, mental health care is often underfunded, with limited access to services and a shortage of trained professionals (Time).
As young Moroccans living abroad, we have observed firsthand the unique challenges faced by diaspora communities. Many individuals from immigrant backgrounds encounter barriers to accessing mental health care, both in their countries of origin and in their countries of residence. Cultural stigma, language barriers, and systemic discrimination continue to contribute to a gap in care (NIH).
In Europe, studies show that migrants and refugees are at increased risk for mental health issues due to factors like economic instability, social marginalization, and limited access to appropriate services (BMC Public Health).
We are committed to bridging the mental health care gap for Moroccan and other immigrant communities in Europe. Our platform provides accessible, culturally sensitive mental health resources, empowering individuals to seek help and build resilience.
We recognize that mental health challenges affect not only individuals living in Morocco, where suicide rates are among the highest in the Arab world (WHO Global Health Observatory), but also Moroccans abroad, who often find themselves without adequate support.
Our long-term vision is to extend our work to lower-income countries, using the knowledge and resources from Europe to contribute to strengthening mental health systems worldwide.
Soukoune (سكون) is an Arabic word that conveys meanings of "stillness," "peace," and "inner calm." For us, Soukoune represents what we aspire to offer: a place where individuals can find mental stillness amidst the challenges of everyday life, and build a foundation of peace within themselves. In a world that often feels chaotic, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to experience soukoune.
